When to Plant
Early spring is the best time to plant, but a good plot is possible if planted in late summer or early fall. Avoid the hot, dry summer months when the heat stresses the young plants. If you plant in late summer, allow the perennials time to bloom and set seed for the following season. If you plant in late summer, allow at least 8 to 10 weeks before the first frost in your area. This will allow the perennials time to bloom and set seed for the following season.
Soil Preparation and Planting
The most important factor in the seeding is the removal of the existing vegetation from the site. Following the manufacturers recommmendations, the spraying of Bonide-Kleenup or a similar product is the most efficient means of accomplishing this. Tilling of the soil to a depth not to exceed 3 inches is the next step. Prepared soil should be raked to form grooves insuring good soil-seed contact. The seeds should be spread with a mechanical spreader on large sites or hand broadcaster on smaller sites. After spreding, lightly rake over the seed again. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture for 4-6 weeks.
Maintenance
Each fall after the first heavy frost, mow or use a weed trimmer to cut the plants 2-3 inches above the soil line. This allows the seed pods from the plants to reseed themselves for the following season.
